Are you listening?
The Bijlokesite is one of 10 locations in Ghent where a Luistervink or ‘bird-listening box' is recording the variety of birds.
Which birds can you hear in Ghent? For birdwatchers, that might be a redundant question, but most people don’t know which bird they’re listening to when they hear birdsong.
That is why special ‘bird-listening boxes’ or Luistervink have been installed at 10 locations in Ghent. Using artificial intelligence, the boxes can recognise bird sounds. They then publish the bird species on a website, so that local residents can learn to recognise the birds in their neighbourhood. The Bijlokesite is one of the locations in Ghent.
The listening boxes will remain in place for a year, mapping the diversity of birds in Ghent. This campaign is an initiative of Natuurpunt Regio Gent and the Ghent Environmental Front.
The listening boxes have been online since February 2026, but donations for this campaign are still welcome via the crowdfunding campaign run by Natuurpunt Gent and the Ghent Environmental Front.
